Disappointment as it's revealed popular Christmas event The Polar Express has been replaced

The Polar Express had been a magical festive event for five years at Weardale Railway but it won't return for Christmas 2017 It would be fair to share there was a great deal of shock on Monday when it was announced that massive Christmas event The Polar Express would not be returning this year. And while hosts Weardale Railway have unveiled a brand new festive train ride - The Train To Christmas Town - many readers who’ve been on the Polar Express before or were hoping to hop on board for the first time in 2017, have been left disappointed. The plug was pulled on the annual event after a row over unpaid royalties but as late as the end of August there were posts on the event Facebook page suggesting it would go ahead, leaving a number of families a bit perplexed to say the least. Nichola Hood commented “My little boy loved it last year and couldn’t wait till this year. Very disappointing,” while Lyn Tweed reacted “That’s why I have not been able to book this year,” and having never had The Polar Express experience before, a despondent Melinda Dinsmore reacted “am I ever going to get to do this?” We couldn’t tell if he was joking or not but Alex Brook even went as far as saying “Might as well cancel Christmas.” Based on an American storybook, Weardale’s new event, The Train to Christmas Town, promises many similar features to The Polar Express with on board characters, carol singing and of course a visit from Father Christmas, but while there were a number of Chronicle readers tagging their friends to get booking up for it, those of you who’ve experienced the Polar Express magic are less than convinced that it will prove a worthy alternative. Amongst all the disappointed readers, many worried about how upset their children would be, some of you did see the funny side, with a number of comments about another potential alternative. David Murphy’s “Don’t worry, they’re running a bus replacement service,” was one of a number on that theme.
